Posted by Bob Badders

Ryan Kalish (Red Bank Catholic) is certainly making the most of his time in the major leagues since his call up on July 31. The 22-year old left-handed hitting outfielder smacked his first career home run to help the Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Yankees on Friday night. Kalish had several friends and family members in attendance and it was undoubtably a special moment for the Shore Conference product. Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston.com does a great job with this story here.

Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno (Middletown South) was injured and carted off the field with what looked like a serious hamstring injury during the Broncos first training camp practice on Sunday. The Denver Post reports, however, that an MRI revealed no significant tear to his right hamstring and Moreno will miss three weeks. This is good news at it was initially feared that the former University of Georgia star had completely torn his hamstring. The Broncos need Moreno healthy as he is projected to be the starting running back after running for 947 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2009.

Well, Miss All Shore Media will become Mrs. All Shore Media on Friday, and then I am going on my honeymoon and will be back Aug. 15, so there won’t be any posts between now and then. I have been told that if I bring my computer to Hawaii, it will be immediately tossed into the Pacific Ocean and followed shortly by divorce papers, so at best, I would check the Twitter link above for any quick news items that I may forward along if I actually leave my phone on.

Follow Scott Stump on Twitter

E-mail: stump@allshoremedia.com

Forgot to add in my Gridiron notes that former Asbury Park running back George Stephens, a three-time, 1,000-yard rusher who helped the Blue Bishops win three straight NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I titles, said he is headed to play at Lackawanna (Pa.) College, a strong junior college in Scranton where Neptune cornerback Warren Mello is also headed. If Stephens stays on track there, he has a chance to at least get a high-level Division I-AA look and maybe even a low Division I-A offer. Stephens was not able to play in the U.S. Army All-Shore Gridiron Classic because he had shoulder surgery in the spring and was not cleared by his doctor to play.

Stephens’s Asbury Park teammate, wide receiver/defensive back Lamar Davenport, is a late addition to the incoming freshman class at Monmouth University. Like former Asbury Park quarterback Will Johnson last year, Davenport has qualified under the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program at Monmouth. Davenport is listed as 6-3 and 175, but to me he looks like he has grown an inch or two since the end of the 2009 season and is closer to 6-4 or so. He could end up being a nice find for Monmouth. He did not play in the Gridiron Classic because he is taking classes at Monmouth to get up to speed heading into his freshman year. Hey, if you are missing the game to better yourself academically, I’m all for it.

That now brings Monmouth’s 2010 recruiting haul from the Shore to 11 players: Davenport, Howell wide receiver Phil Adamo, Colts Neck kicker Eric Spillane, Raritan running back Jesse Raymond, Manchester defensive tackle Jimmy Lawson, Toms River North linebacker Steve Barroso, Lacey offensive lineman Corey Neal, Manasquan wide receiver/defensive back Neal Sterling, Manchester offensive lineman Josh Siemanowicz, Lacey linebacker Anthony Caputo and Manasquan defensive end/linebacker Dan Sullivan. In addition, former Manalapan star running back Jimmy Gilburn has transferred from Stony Brook to Monmouth heading into his sophomore season.

Here are this year’s inductees into the Neptune Athletic Hall of Fame, which was created last season and inducted its first class in the fall. The names were provided by former Neptune football coach John Fiore, who was involved in the creation of the Hall of Fame.

The name that jumps out for me from my era is Scott Harley, who was a star running back in the 1990s who went on to play at East Carolina. Michelle Allen was in the news this winter because the Monmouth University Hall of Famer was the star on the 1984 girls basketball team that won the Group IV title, the only Group title in program history until the current team won Group III and then the schools first Tournament of Champions title this winter.

Jake Jones is also a legendary player on the boys hoops team for the Scarlet Fliers, and Glen DePalo, who is going in the HOF as a contributor, is the Scarlet Fliers’ long-time athletic trainer.

Former Red Bank Catholic star outfielder Ryan Kalish is now one step away from the big leagues. Kalish was promoted to Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) for the Boston Red Sox today.

Kalish, who was Boston’s Minor League Player of the Year last season, was hitting .293 with a .404 on-base percentage in 41 games for the Portland (Me.) Sea Dogs, Boston’s Double-A affiliate. He also led the team with 35 runs scored and 13 stolen bases, and was second with 29 RBIs and 13 walks.

In the college ranks, former Matawan standout Julian Sonnenfeld was recently recognized for a great season at Wesleyan. Below is the release:

Julian Sonnenfeld named first-team all NESCAC

Sonnenfeld, a second-team all-NESCAC pick in 2009, and a two-time CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine District I Academic All-America selection, led Wesleyan with a .418 batting average in 2010 as Wesleyan secured the #2 seed in the NESCAC West with a 7-5 conference mark and a 22-14 overall record. Sonnenfeld set a Wesleyan record for doubles in a season with 25 and runs scored with 53. He led the NESCAC in doubles, runs scored, total bases (105), and was second in RBI (49), tied for third in homers (8) and fifth in hits (56). His batting average placed him seventh in the NESCAC. Over his three seasons, Sonnenfeld has collected 131 hits to rank 14th on the Wesleyan leader list with a year still to play. He sports a career .391 batting average. Sonnenfeld picked up two more honors after the season as he went on to be named a third-team national Academic All-American and a New England Baseball Coaches Association third-team all-New England Division III choice.
